Calming Lotion

Calming lotion is something that is used by your students when they just need a little extra love or if they’re cranky. Well I definitely need a little love lotion right now! I’ve been working in my classroom the last two days and I’m already worn out. I changed classrooms and grade levels so I’m unpacking boxes and trying to figure out where to put everything. I’m sure I could use a little cranky lotion too!

So back to the calming lotion. We use Conscious Discipline in our district. If you have never heard of this program you should definitely check out their website.  This is a program that teaches children how to self regulate their emotions. There are lots of components of the program that you can do without the training. Calming cream is one of the ideas that you can do in your classroom. Conscious Discipline has a make and take on how to use calming cream in your classroom. Click on Calming Cream to see what they suggest.

I call it calming lotion in my room. I keep it in the We Care Center in my classroom. If a child is feeling frustrated or distressed they are allowed to go get a small amount of lotion to put on their hands. While they are smelling and rubbing their hands together it helps soothe them and relax them.

These are a couple of the calming lotions that I have used in my classroom for several years. I use lotions that me students buy me for gifts, and I buy some at the Dollar Store. I try to get soothing scents such as lavender, mint, or rose. In the Calming Cream  make and take they give suggestions of scents and what they are good for. I  also add a label on the front of the lotion. I have smart lotion, hurt lotion, and  love lotion pictured.

At the beginning of the year we talk about the lotions and what they are for. If I notice a child is having difficulties I suggest they pick a lotion. My students  seemed to use the smart lotion a lot when they struggled with their work. With younger kids you may have to give the lotion to them yourself in the beginning.

This year I have created new labels for my lotions (the older ones were looking a little worn) that go along with my monster theme. I have made large labels, medium sized labels, and small labels. Please feel free to use these Calming Lotion Tags  for your classroom. Just click on the Calming Lotion Tag picture.

These lotions have really helped my students throughout the years. If you decide to use calming lotions in your classroom let me know how they work out for you.

How did you explain the lotion to parents and get approval?

I didn’t explain it to our parents. Our school allows use to have lotion. I’m sure you could send a note home explaining what the lotions are for and ask if any parents do not want their kids using the lotion. I would run it by my principal first to see what the school policy is.
