I want to share with you some of my favorite February picture books to teach in the upcoming weeks of school. You click on the picture of the book to learn more about them.
Chinese/Lunar New Year
Sam and the Lucky Money– This is one I read to my kids every year. It is a great lesson for the kids on how to be grateful. Sam gets money for Chinese New Year and doesn’t know what to spend it on. He doesn’t think it’s enough to buy anything of value. Finally, he decided to do something useful with it. It is a heartwarming story about kids seeing what’s really important in the world.
Dumpling Soup– In other Asian countries, this time of the year is Lunar New Year. This is a story about a Korean family and how they celebrate Lunar New Year. They have a very diverse family with many generations of people. It’s great to see everyone get together for the Lunar New Year. You will love this sweet book! Such a great way to show your kids other ways to celebrate the New Year.

Valentine’s Day
Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch– This book is a great book about compassion. It teaches us to be kind and what can happen when we are kind to others. Your kids will love this book. You can use it to teach plot, character feelings, and theme. My students always got excited for me to read them this book.
A Crankenstein Valentine– This is not your traditional Valentine’s book. This is a cranky monster who isn’t into all the lovey-dovey of Valentine’s Day. He thinks everything Valentine’s is yucky! Of course, we know he comes around. Your kids are going to love this monster! He is cranky but cute!
Zombie in Love– Here’s another great one that my kids always loved. This zombie is looking for love and is trying all the traditional things. He tries online dating, dance classes, and even working out at the gym. Nothing he does seems to work, until… Oh, you will have to read it to see what happens. Your kids are going to love all the illustrations.
Mardi Gras
Gaston Goes to Mardi Gras– My kids loved this book. It is so hard to find picture books on Mardi Gras but this is a great one that shows how Gaston, the alligator, celebrates Mardi Gras in New Orleans. He goes to a parade and sees all the floats. Such great illustrations also. He has a series of books that you need to check out.
Mardi Gras ABCs – This is a new book I found. It is a great book to show all the vocabulary that goes along with Mardi Gras. If your kids don’t know what Mardi Gras is or why it’s important, this is a great book with illustrations of all the important details of Mardi Gras from A to Z.
I also have some Valentine and Mardi Gras Grammar Color by Code pages your kids will love. It is a great review of parts of speech and it’s fun too. Just click on the pictures to learn more.
