I just love Halloween! The candy, the decorations, the scary movies, and especially the trick-or-treating.
So this picture was taken in 1978, back in the day when all Halloween costumes were homemade. I was five years old and I was the “woman” with the big…hair! I am with my little brother, the hobo, and my cousin, Raggedy Andy. Such awesome memories. Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays and trick-or-treating with my family is one of the reasons I love it.
I especially love Halloween books. I would like to share with you 3 of my all-time favorite Halloween read alouds.
The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin
Don’t let the name fool you, this is not a scary book. This book is about a square pumpkin named Spookley who is made fun of because he doesn’t look like the other pumpkins. Of course, he saves the day when all of the other pumpkins roll out during a storm and he is square and is able to stop them from rolling away. It is an amazing story about how being different is good.
There are so many activities that you can do with this book. There is a website that gives you some ideas to do with your kids, and there is an awesome movie that goes along with the book. One of my favorite activities I do with my kids every year is from the Applicious Teacher. She has a retelling foldable that has the kids write the summary and theme of the book.
Creepy Carrots
This is just such a fun book to read! It’s not really a Halloween book, but it is creepy. Well not really, unless you think carrots following you are scary. I love the illustrations. They are in black and white with the carrots being orange. It reminds me so much of the Twilight Zone. My students love me reading this book to them. It is always checked out at the library.
The Hallo-Wiener
And finally, my favorite Halloween read aloud, The Hallo-Wiener! I just love Oscar. He just wants to make his mom happy so he wears the hot dog Halloween costume she got him. All the other dogs make fun of him. That’s ok because when the dogs are scared by the monster (the cats dressed up) Oscar saves the day. This book also teaches a lesson to just be yourself.
I have my kids make a Halloween story mobile when I read this book to them. It is so much fun.

I hope you enjoy these Halloween read alouds! Let me know which is your favorite.
